DiMaggio was shot and killed by an FBI agent during an arrest attempt after the alleged kidnapper and the teen were initially spotted by a search helicopter, Gore said.
“Obviously we would have like Mr. DiMaggio to surrender and face justice in a court of law,” Gore said, “but that was not the case.”
Hannah was transported to a hospital for evaluation “appears to be in pretty good shape,” Gore said. She was expected to be reunited with her father, Brett Anderson, sometime Sunday.
Search teams on horseback and all-terrain vehicles had spread out across a remote wilderness area in Idaho earlier Saturday in the attempt to find Hannah and DiMaggio, authorities said.
Police set up checkpoints on roads in the area and helicopters were brought in to assist with the massive manhunt, which included more than 150 law enforcement officials.
The search effort was launched a day earlier after a horseback rider near Cascade, Idaho, reported coming across a man and a young woman who matched the description of DiMaggio and Hannah on Wednesday, Gore said.
The man struck up a brief conversation with them in the River of No Return Wilderness area, Ada County sheriff’s acting spokeswoman Andrea Dearden said.
“They did speak and exchange pleasantries. I don’t think there was a lot of information exchanged,” Dearden said. “He left the conversation believing they were camping in the area.”
The horseman said the man and girl were hiking with camping gear, Dearden said.
He called the Amber Alert tip line after he saw a news account of the search later that night.
A search of the area Friday turned up a blue, four-door Nissan Versa belonging to DiMaggio.
The car was hidden by brush, with its license plates removed, Gore said.
Authorities confirmed the car’s ownership by its vehicle identification number.
DiMaggio was being sought in the murders of Christina Anderson and her son, Ethan, as well as the abduction of Hannah, her daughter.
